One Week

One week until we set sail down the Duwamish River that is. Thank you to B.J. Cummings from the Duwamish Cleanup Coalition for her invaluable support, for coordinating our trip and her insights into life on the Duwamish River and its history. If you go to the link for the Coalition you can find out how to take a boat ride of your own and much more, including up to date information about the ongoing efforts to clean up the Duwamish River.

Southpark on Our Minds

Yesterday Fiona and I traveled to South Park, to meet with some of the good folks of South Park Arts over a cup of coffee, good conversation and some tasty food at Loretta's as part of our ongoing effort to get to know communities along the shores of the Duwamish. South Park Arts has been up and running since 2005 and continues to build community through the arts. Thanks to Wendy Woldenberg for the wonderful tour of South Park, and to Jen Ney, Bill Pease, Colleen Lindsey and Wendy for taking time to meet with us and share their unique and rich history of commitment and deep ties to each other and their neighborhood.

What is South Park?:

South Park is a diverse area with a long history of industry and farming along the banks of the Duwamish River. It is, in fact, the only river “town” in the City of Seattle and has a high number of businesses, second only to downtown Seattle. Yet is still retains a sense of its farming history because the original Marra family farm (the Marra’s were one of the original family farmers at Pike Place Market) is now a large community gardening area. Today South Park residents are very community minded and hard at work revitalizing and increasing the livability of their corner of Seattle. Their efforts are visible as you drive around this art filled community located at the southern border of the City of Seattle.

Upcoming Events in  South Park:

Take note that South Park Arts has a current call to artist for Putts Out 2012, where artist create holes for a temporary mini-golf course on Thistle Avenue. The submission deadline is July 6 and accepted artists will receive a stipend of $100. Putt Out happens on August 6th and will have live music, food and, of course, golf.
